Methylotrophy C1 Metabolism, Methanotrophy, Energetics

Methylotrophy is the metabolic ability of certain microorganisms to utilize reduced one-carbon (C1) compounds (without C–C bonds) as their sole source of carbon and energy.

Common C1 substrates:

  • Methane (CH₄)
  • Methanol (CH₃OH)
  • Formaldehyde (CH₂O)
  • Formate (HCOO⁻)
  • Methylated amines
