Proton Motive Force generation in photosynthetic bacteria

  • The proton motive force (PMF) is the electrochemical gradient of protons (H⁺) generated across a membrane during photosynthesis. It is the immediate energy source for ATP synthesis via Chemiosmosis was proposed by Peter Mitchell.

PMF has two components:

  • ΔpH (proton gradient)
  • Δψ (membrane potential)
