Oxidative Phosphorylation IV: Transport of ADP, Pi and cytosolic electrons to Mitochondria; Regulation of oxidative phosphorylation
Two specific systems transport ADP and Pi into the matrix and ATP out to the cytosol.
- Adenine nucleotide translocase (ATP/ADP translocase)
- Phosphate/H+ translocase
- Integral to the inner membrane.
- Binds ADP-3 in the intermembrane space and transports it into the matrix in exchange for an ATP-4 molecule simultaneously transported.
- The antiporter moves four negative charges out for every three moved in.
- The activity of antiport is favored by the transmembrane electrochemical gradient. The proton- motive force drives ATP-ADP exchange.
