- Gluconeogenesis occurs in all animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms.
- In mammals, the major site of gluconeogenesis is the liver (90% of glucose synthesis) and the minor site is the kidney (10%).
- It helps to maintain the blood glucose level during prolonged starvation.
- The major noncarbohydrate precursors are pyruvate, lactate, alanine, oxaloacetate, dihydroxyacetone phosphate. , glycerol, and several glucogenic amino acids.
- Gluconeogenesis is not the reversal of glycolysis
